Market research firm Canalys reports a drop in US computer sales in the last quarter of 2021, which came after three quarters in which the industry managed to set new records - even relative to 2020. Laptops sales fell 28 percent, while Chromebooks based on Google's Chrome OS were particularly hit with a 73 percent drop.
The tablet market shrank even further, with a 31 percent decline. In only one category, that of desktops, has the industry recorded nine percent growth - but this is the smallest of the three categories. Nevertheless, in summing up the entire year 2021 in the American market, the industry is recording stability and even growth of a single percent compared to the previous year. Canalis sees this as a positive sign overall, indicating great potential for profits.
In manufacturing the computer market by manufacturers, the leading brand of 2021 is HP with 28.9 percent of the market. It is followed by Dell with 24.5 percent, and Lenovo with 16.8 percent. Apple came in fourth with 11.1 percent and the largest growth in the category compared to the previous year, perhaps thanks to the launch of computers based on the company's M1 processors. In fifth place is Acer, with about five percent of the market.
In the tablet category, Apple has absolute dominance, with about 42 percent of the market. Amazon stands with a significant gap with 23.9 percent and Samsung with 17.4 percent. All other manufacturers are content with remnants like Microsoft, whose Surface products have reached 3.9 percent of the market, and Lenovo with 3 percent.
